Garmin nüvi and zūmo Make Great Dad’s Day Gifts- posted in Motorcycle, On the Road,

2010-06-15

nüvi and zūmo Make Great Dad's Day GiftsWhether Dad drives a vehicle with two wheels or four, we have some great Father’s Day gift ideas that won’t break the bank. The nüvi 1200 is one of our entry-level GPS devices that is ideal for the person who doesn’t need bells-and-whistles, but still wants a GPS navigator to help them find the nearest gas station or street address. It was recently reviewed by About.com and according to them, “I’ve used a number of Garmin GPS units in the past and they’ve always been really solid machines. The nüvi 1200 is no exception. The nüvi 1200 is a solid bet for a basic GPS device.”

If Dad prefers the freedom of the open road, another great bang-for-your-buck is the zūmo 220. The zūmo 220 is affordable, compact and versatile. A recent PC Advisor review said, “The Garmin zūmo 220 is a GPS unit that’s full of features. You can use it with both cars and motorcycles, and the inclusion of both mounts means you won’t have to spend minutes fiddling to transfer the zūmo 220 between vehicles. The user interface is good and the unit can be used without trouble whichever vehicle you’re using.”

Ask Garmin: Which GPS is best for a long walk? (A really, really long walk…)

2010-06-07

Today’s Ask Garmin question was sent to @JakesJournal on Twitter by Lindy G (or @formerfatmama), who describes herself as “A deaf 37 yr old single mom on a weight loss journey. I plan to walk across America.” Lindy asked “Which GPS device would you recommend for someone who’s planning to walk across america? Preferably a handheld or wristheld.” Not a typical question as Lindy’s goal is pretty remarkable, but the answer(s) can apply to many hikers/walkers/runners. Meanwhile, another cross-country endeavor is tapping into Garmin’s technology, as Move For ALS cyclists are currently using an Edge 605 to pile on the miles for ALS awareness.
As for Lindy’s trek, Jake’s condensed reply (the 140-character limit on Twitter is the only way we can keep him from rambling) was: “@formerfatmama Great goal to walk across US! I’d suggest either Oregon (geotagged photos), Dakota (light navigation), Forerunner (mileage)”
So here’s where we elaborate on the strengths of each:
Oregon 550 (or 550t, which adds preloaded U.S. topography in case Lindy goes cross-country): In addition to super-simple touchscreen interface and robust variety of features, the 550 series features a built-in 3.2 MP camera so that Lindy can snap pictures of her journey along the way. Because the pictures are automatically geotagged with her location, her friends, family and supporters can see where each was taken.

Dakota 10 or 20: Lindy can save a little money (and a few ounces in her backpack) by going with Dakota, which features the same touchscreen ease of use in a little smaller package. Like Oregon, the Dakota can use City Navigator microSD cards to add turn-by-turn directions and millions of points of interest.

Forerunner310XT Forerunner series: If Lindy just wants to track mileage and be able to upload her routes each day for friends to see on Garmin Connect, any of the GPS-enabled Forerunner watches will do the trick while sitting comfortably on her wrist. For a long battery life of up to 20 hours, she could turn to the Forerunner 310XT. Also, 310XT, the 405/405CX or older 305 or 205 could help with breadcrumb navigation and waypoint management. And for simple start-and-stop tracking of pace, time and distance, the Forerunner 110 is a great bargain.
Foretrex series: Lindy can get key features from both our outdoor recreation and fitness products by turning to a Foretrex for wrist-worn navigation with breadcrumb trails and easy waypoint marking. As with all of the devices listed above, she’ll be able to easily upload her progress to Garmin Connect.
Whichever Garmin she goes with, we wish Lindy all the best on reaching her goals and continued success to the Move For ALS cyclists for supporting a great cause.

Team Garmin: Tour of California in their own words –posted in Into Sports, Team Garmin,

2010-05-25

If you’ve been following last week’s Tour of California through race recaps or Twitter updates, you know that the Argyle Armada is often quoted by the media – or asked to write first-person perspectives. With two stages down and crazy days ahead, here are a few recent excerpts from Team Garmin: For starters, the always quotable Dave Zabriskie will keep his fans entertained while blogging for USA Today: “I am now a resident of this great state, so this is truly my home race. Some of the biggest names in cycling are here; guys we compete with all over Europe are now on our home turf.” Monday, Team CEO Jonathan Vaughters commented on a soggy Stage 2 that put Zabriskie, Tom Danielson, Ryder Hesjedal (8th today) and Peter Stetina within 10 seconds of the overall lead: “Tour of Cali is shaping up about as expected. A group of 28 came in to Santa Rosa today, making the first GC selection of the race. Garmin-Transitions and Radio Shack had the largest representations in this front group with 4 and 5 riders respectively, setting up the GC war to come.” Twitter brought us 140-character-or-less post-race ponderings from Steve Cozza: “Lots of crashes today. I saw like 25 diff crashes today in the rain. I too lost some skin going down trinity.I felt strong.” and Stetina: “Rain+twisty descents+fogged glasses= mortally damaged brake pads. I gotta remember to drink in rainy stages.” And we’ll let Zabriskie sign off for us as we agree completely: “I could sit here and type a million words about how excited I am about this race, but DZ needs to get his rest.”
